Google’s biggest competitor for the sales of the Nexus 7 is the Amazon Kindle FIRE. The Nexus 7 has a distinct advantage of being the first official Google reference tablet that means it will ship with the latest version of Android. Now it looks like you can run the latest version of Android on the Kindle FIRE.

Android 4.1.1 has been ported to the device and if you love to tinker with your device you can get it loaded on your handset as well. You need to be running a rooted device to load the new firmware and there a few kinks in this initial build. If you’re willing to follow the development of this ROM it should become stable soon and it should offer a similar experience to the Nexus 7. That is, minus the powerful gaming processor which shouldn’t be a problem if you don’t game on your device anyway? Check out the video below to see how it runs and click here to load it up on your device now.
