Seriously what brings you to android?

Ok. I'll start. I liked gmail and heard google was making a phone operating system so when they announced the g1 i ordered it (the day it was announced) I was happy with my experiences with the phone (it eventually got me in to minor modding of my phones, and was first introduction to the command line, now i only run linux computers) and when google announced the nexus one I ordered it (the day it was announced) and with the nexus one i have never been happier with a phone (and I might say a piece of technology.)

Oh and I also liked this because it wasn't an iphone. (hehe the forums first anti iphone sentiment...)

Similar story here. I remember reading that Google was coming out with an open source mobile OS based on Linux, and I couldn't wait to try it. At the time I was on Verizon, and they seemed to keep finding new ways to charge money for every little thing. So I bought the G1 on launch day and paid Verizon an early termination fee. The G1 was such a workhorse. Not the fanciest hardware, but it did so much and was so customizable. I remember rooting it being nervous and all excited to try new stuff, but even the stock G1 was so much better than my Verizon dumb phone: free maps (subscription on VZ), threaded texts, free ringtones (yeah they charged for that, too), and I could connect to my PC and move files. It was just like a little computer, with terminal commands and everything. It's great to see how far Android has come since those early days.

For me, I found android out of frustration with Blackberry, and Tmobile's lack of commitment to releasing serious BB hardware. At&t released the Bold, Verizon released the Storm, and Tmo's big BB release? A stupid flip BB!!! :-O Tired of my Curve, at the end of my rope about to leave for Verizon, I read google was putting out a new OS that would rival the Iphone OS. And the device would be released on Tmo to my surprise. I continued to follow the development closely and preordered the G1 the 1st hour it was available. It blew the doors off my Curve in every way and I fell in love with the young OS.

Yes Android has come so far. I remember when you could scroll down and hit the bottom of the android market!lol Even though Android continued to grow rapidly, Tmo still seemed to be clueless about releasing serious hardware. After the G1, I got the My touch 3g, and the Behold 2, but couldn't stand watching Sprint get the Hero and Verizon get the mighty Moto Droid. It was clear tmo is a kiddie company not ready to compete with the big boys for my money. So I left and got my Droid. It's been the best move I could've made. I don't care if it cost a little more for Verizon's plans. This company is dead serious about Android and that's what matters to me. Sprint is also serious.

To think after all this time tmo just released the 1st TRUE upgrade from the G1 with the Vibrant. Its madness! Meanwhile, the Droid became the most successful Android device ever, and now i'm enjoying Android at the highest level on my Droid X. Life is good!

I had forgotten about the early days of the market! I'd check the newest apps daily and you could scroll through a day or two worth of new releases in a couple of minutes!

I'm hoping that T-Mobile project emerald phone makes you Verizon users very jealous by the way :)

Sorry it took me so long to meander my way into this intro section, but I might as well go ahead now and avoid my thesis a bit longer...
I am a graduate student in Archaeology, and was a late G1 adopter (february of 2009), as I had to switch carriers due to coverage, and it was either Verizon ($$$) or Tmo. I have since adopted the N1 and now the Captivate (had to switch again to AT&T), but I have to say, as much as I love my Captivate, I am still amazed at how ground-breaking and game-changing the G1 was and is. I still pick it up and play with CyanogenMod's latest, and miss everything but the small screen and processor.
I was drawn to the G1 because of its open source OS (I run and love Ubuntu), and how capable that makes the platform as a whole. I am excited for where Android seems to be headed, and I can't wait for the upcoming crop of tablets...

Thanks, I was a long-term lurking member in the AC forums (rarely contributed because I was still getting my bearings) and it is good to see so many of the positive usernames/members from there in here. Lately I have been using androidforums.com in lieu of AC, for a number of reasons, but mainly the site is laid out more logically/clearly and there are a lot of noobs over there that need help (the Galaxy S GPS fix/Froyo is like Cupcake all over again, but with less knowledge than that debacle at AC as a lot of the posters are Joe Shmoe who just traded in his blackberry or iPhone). I remember what it is like and I want to help, but I'll admit it gets frustrating when they just dismiss what you say, as if they have been around it longer than you have- I am just do glad you guys were so patient over there.
When I saw on twitter that djunio had started this forum, I thought maybe the drama and bloat of AC had gotten to him as well, and was hoping to see some familiar handles in here.
