If you’re a T-Mobile customer then you’re already familiar with UMA. For the rest of you guys, UMA is a service that allows you to make free calls over Wi-Fi from your mobile phone. T-Mobile has axed the project and it will probably never come back. But the bus doesn’t stop there, Kineto Wireless has announced an update to their Smart Wi-Fi app that adds this feature.
“Smartphones have highlighted the coverage and capacity challenges of mobile networks, especially in indoor locations. Operators have started to look to Wi-Fi, already installed in many homes and offices, to address these issues… we have now enhanced our Smart Wi-Fi Application to support the latest version of Android and validated it with the leading Android smartphone manufacturers.”
To take advantage of this, you need an Android 2.2 device and the app of course. This service uses the 3GPP UMA/GAN standard to alter your Wi-Fi connection and makes it into an extension of your carrier’s network. Hopefully this extension makes its way onto the Android Market, currently it’s targeted towards carriers. Therefore, it’ll be up to them to add this feature to Android. Hopefully we will see it integrated soon, most likely T-Mobile will be the first out of the gate to offer this.
