I don’t know how many times I’ve dropped my phone. It happens so often that now the first thing I look for when I purchase a new device is a nice case and a good screen protector. If you own a Samsung Galaxy S 3 and you’re looking to protect your device, SEIDIO has you covered on both fronts with the same case. The OBEX Waterproof case is now available and it features a built-in screen protector. This case might not be for everybody, but it’s essential if you work or play in area where your device is liable to take on shock or even fall into water.
The OBEX is constructed from Polycarbonate and Thermoplastic Polyurethane materials and it’s designed to keep your device safe in up to 2 meters of water for 30 minutes. The water in my fishbowl test isn’t that deep but I literally charged the device before running a few errands and left it in the bowl for at least 3 hours and the phone still functioned like it never went swimming.
The device also exceeds the MIL-STD-810G test which means you can safely drop the device from 6 feet and it will survive the fall. The case is also Dust resistance and it features a built-in 4h rated screen protector that doesn’t take away from the sensitivity of the display. Even when wet, you can still use your device with little to no performance drop in sensitivity.
Taking a tour of the case from top to bottom you’ll find a hole for the noise cancellation and a rubber boot over the 3.5mm head jack. Along the right side of the device is the power/lock button and the bottom of the device there’s a door that houses another rubber boot for the USB jack and another hole for the mic The volume buttons are on the left and at first it’s a bit tough to use the buttons but after a few hours the buttons soften up and you can use the device like you would without the case. On the back of the care is SEIDIO’s logo on the bottom and protection for the camera, speaker and flash. The case has an antireflective screen over the camera and taking pictures look pretty much the same as they would without the case on the device. Sound isn’t muffled either, it actually sounds a tad better in my experience. Using the speakerphone is a different story. In my tests the person at the other end of the call had a hard time hearing me.
The front of the case has cut outs for the sensors and FFC and you’ll have no trouble hearing the person on the other end of the line when you make regular phone calls. They will be able to hear you just fine as well. The home and capacitive buttons on the front are easily accessible and you can use them with the same performance as you would if the device was naked. The screen protector is pretty good as well, I had no problems playing games on using the phone as would on a day to day basis. The case doesn’t affect signal strength on both Wi-Fi and the cell network. Operating the device while a USB cable is connected to the device is a bit clunky and uncomfortable to use.
This is one of the best waterproof cases I’ve ever used. It performs as advertised and it doesn’t affect the functionality of the device all that much. If you can get over the extra thickness and weight it adds to your device, you’ll love the case. If you work in high impact job or outside, this would be the top case on my list of accessories to buy. The price might be kind of high for some of your liking, it will cost you $79.99 from SEIDIO but you can find it cheaper at places like Amazon and a few other online retailers.
